ABSTRACT

Field experiments were conducted at two sites in Umudike, Umuahia, to compare the effects of different animal manures on soil physical properties, growth and yield of maize. The animal manure treatments were poultry dropping, cow dung, pig waste applied at the rate of 10 tons Tha and control (no amendment). All the amendments were incorporated into the soil at the beginning of the raining season and monitored through the end of the experimental period. Treatments were replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. The following soil physical properties: bulk density, total porosity, gravimetric moisture content, saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil resistance to penetration, aggregate stability, particle size and soil temperature were determined for 0 tolO andlO to 20 cm depths of soil at the beginning of the work, 59 and 106 days after planting maize. Results shows that manure treatments had no significant influence on soil temperature. Soils treated with animal manure especially poultry manure and cow dung had the lowest bulk densities, resistance to penetration, higher total porosity and moisture contents. The highest saturated hydraulic conductivity and mean weight diameter for the two sites were recorded on plots treated with poultry manure. Poultry manure treatment also maintained significantly (p<0.05) better performance in plant height, dry matter yield, and grain yield of maize. Grain yield was in the order: poultry manure> cow dung> pig waste> control.
