ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at carrying out a comparative analysis of microorganisms isolated from cow dung and goat dropping. Five samples of cow dung and five samples of Goat droppings were randomly collected from different slaughter houses in Umuahia district. From the result the total bacterial counts of cow dung which ranged from 1.8 xlO5cfu/g to 5.4 x105cfu/g, while fungal counts ranged from 1.9 x103cfu/g to 4.4 x iO3cfu/g. The total bacterial counts of goat droppings ranged from 3.3 x105to 6.7 x105while the fungal counts ranges from 1.5 xlO4cfu/g to 6.8x lo4cfu/g. The isolated bacteria found in cow dungs and goat droppings samples were Bacillus spp., Bacteriodies spp., Streptococcus spp., Pseudornonas spp, Micrococcus spp. and Enterobacter spp. The three fungi isolated from cow dung and goat dropping samples were, Aspergillus niger, penicillum and Mucor. The bacterium that had the highest percentage occurrence in cow dung sample was Bacillus spp (33.33%) while the bacteria that had the least percentage occurrences in cow dung was Micrococcus, Bacteriodies and Pseudonomonas spp. (6.67%) the fungal that had the highest percentage occurrences in goat droppings was Aspergillus spp. (20%), for the least is Mucor and Pencillum (6.67%) respectively. The bacterium that had the highest percentage occurrence in goat dropping sample was Bacillus spp (25%), followed by Pseudomonas species (18.75%) while bacteria that had the least percentage occurrences in goat droppings was Micrococcus, and streptococcus species (12.25%) while fungi, the highest fungi isolates is Aspergillus species and Mucor (12.25%), for the lowest is pencilluin (6.25%) respectively. From the present study it can be concluded that Cow dung and Goat droppings harbors a rich microbial diversity, containing different species of bacteria and fungi isolates. The isolates from Cow and goat dropping have similar organism but cow dung have bacteria genera called Bacteriodes which was not isolated from goat droppings. Most of the microorganisms isolated from both are pathogenic which can cause great risk of infection for human.
