ABSTRACT
Antlions are of the class — insecta and order Neuroptera.
All antlion larvae have the characteristic habit of each constructing a funnel
— shaped pit of about 2 — 5 cm in diameter, with slopping sides in dry sands.
Anthion larvae are usually small creatures, belonging to diverse groups with
relatively few species. The Neuroptera is one of the most primitive orders of
insects showing complete metamorphosis. Larvae live for about 1 — 3 years,
during which they enter Pupa stage and in less than one month emerge as adults.
Larvae are carnivorous; some adults are also carnivorous and are short — lived.
In spite of their interesting structures and habits, Neuroptera are not very
well — know by general Entomologists; indeed, there are few specialists on
these groups. It then become necessary for antlions study and identification
especially in our vicinity here in Urn u dike. Antlion larvae found in Michael
Okpara University Agriculture Umudike have similar characteristics both in
feeding, habitat and structure with slight differences in colours. More
research work was done by rearing six health antlion larvae in a plastic cups
containing dry soil. From observation and result, it was established that this
larvae as an insect has complete metamorphosis. The limited period for this
experimental work, hindered the procurement of eggs. However, other stages like
larvae, pupae adults were easily obtained through rearing. This work then
concludes that antlion larvae can be adequately use for biological control of
insects especially ants.
