ABSTRACT

In this investigation, the plants Haraungana madagascariensis, Sarcocephalus esculentus and Baphia nitida were selected on the basis of their anti TB uses as claimed by the traditional healers/ practioners. The plants were extracted by percolation using ethanol. The residues ETi, ET2, and ET3 from Harungana madagascariensis, sarcocephalus esculentus and Baphia nitida respectively were partitioned and concentrated to obtain fractions (Chi, Chz, and Chs), petroleum ether fractions(PEi, PE2, and PE3), aqueous methanol fractions(MEi,ME2, and ME3) and water fractions of (WAi, WA2, and WA3), obtained were subjected to antimicrobial screening assay (AMA) using agar diffusion method. The chloroform fractions Chi, Chz, and Cha 1 . being relatively active in all tests were made candidates for chromatography. Column chromatography of the fraction Chi, from H. madagascariensis afforded three relatively pure compounds IJFi, IJGi, and IJHi, while fraction Chz from S. esculentus gave two pure compounds IJEi, and IJF2 and fraction from B. nitida afforded one compound IJI2. The purity of these compounds were confirmed using different solvents with varying polarities. A combination of mass spectra 1HNMR, 13NMR, DEPT 45, 90 and 135, H/C, and COSY iH/1!! COSY helped in proposing the structures. The results obtained in the (AMA) proved to be a good pointer to the presence of active secondary metabolites in IJFi, IJGi, IJHi, IJE2, IJF2, IJI2 and other fractions in varying proportions.
