ABSTRACT

Soil suitability assessment for agriculture is meant to evaluate the ability of a piece of land to provide the optimal ecological requirement of a certain crop variety. In other words, assessing the suitability of soil enables crop development and maximum productivity (i-lole, 1979). With characterization and classification of soils, information on distribution, potential suitability and constrains of such soil is established so that the most appropriate soil management system can de designed. In addition, knowledge on the soil suitability is also essential to determine the best land use for sustained crop production (Bow, 1979) Generally, unit characterization is done to provide guideline information for regional development, planning and classification of the soil for both agricultural and other purposes. For more effective agronomic utilization and suitability determination of soil for plant growth, detailed characterizations are required; (Ojekunle ci c/, 1982). This is because soil characteristics or properties are likely to change across small distance and depth. These variations are most often due to changes in soil forming factors climate, parent material. Organisms, topography and time (Brand and Weil, 1999).
