Characterization And Management Of Soils Of Amuzu-Oro Ibeku In South Eastern Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Amuzu-oro Ibeku occupies a total area
of about 10,000 hectares, and delimited on the East by Umuhute village, on the
West by Umuaroko village, on the North is Avonkwu village and on the South by
Ajaa and Iyienyi villages respectively. According to report of soil map of
South Eastern Nigeria of 1983, conducted by the Federal Department of
Agricultural land Resources (FDALR), soils of the then Imo state were divided
into nine (9) mapping units, amongst which was unit 408 to which soils of the
Amuzu-oro Ibeku belong. The soils in this unit are characterized as well
drained, light brown in colour and with texture varying from sand to sandy loam
at the top to clay loam and clay at the lower depths (FDALR, 1983).
Characterization of soils to a large extent determines the use to which the
soil can be put and the vulnerability of soil to deterioration. Soils of the
humid area of Nigeria are highly weathered, low in cation exchange capacity,
have well developed profiles, with acid solum, poor in plant nutrient, well
drained and have good structures that provide for good aeration (FDALR, 1983).
