ABSTRACT
Three soil profile pits which
represented three soil units (ES-1, ES-2 and ES-3) were developed within the
Sandstone and Coastal Plain Sands transition of Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike Western Farm in South Eastern Nigeria and were studied for
their physicochemical characteristics and classifications on a two-hectare
piece of Land. Laboratory studies included Particle Size Analysis, Soil pH,
Organic Carbon, Organic matter, total nitrogen, Exchange Acidity, Available
Phosphorus, Exchangeable Cations. Cations Exchange Capacity on all the soil
units. The classification was done using the USDA Soil Taxonomy with approximate
correlation of the FAO/ UNESCO Soil Map of the World Legend. Data obtained
showed that most of the soils varied from dark brown at the surface horizons to
yellowish brown at the surface horizons in their coloration. Soil reaction was
strongly acid to moderately acid. The percentage organic carbon was moderate,
total nitrogen was generally low. Exchangeable cations were low in calcium,
potassium and sodium while magnesium ranged from low to moderate. According to
USDA soil taxonomy, the soils units in ES-1 and ES-2 were identified as
Ultisols. They were further classified as Typic Kandiudult (USDA) and Haplic
Nitisol (FAO\UNESCO) while soil unit ES-3, identified as lnceptisol, was
classified as Aeric Epiaquept (USDA) and Gleyic Cambisol (FAQ/UNESCO).
