ABSTRACT

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), a white crystalline salt, is a food additive widely used by individuals because of the savory spark it brings to meals. Artemisinin Combination Therapy (Artemether-Lumefantrine) is used for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparium. The aim of this study was to determine the testes antioxidant status in normal and monosodium glutamateintoxicated rats co-treated with arthemether-lumefantrine. Accordingly, a total number of thirty male albino rats were randomly assigned into six groups of five (5) rats each. The first group served as the control were fed normal rat feed and water, the second group (ACT therapeutic group) were exposed to normal therapeutic dose of ACT therapeutic dose (14.29 mg/kg), the third group (ACT high dose group) were exposed to x5 ACT therapeutic dose (71.43 mg/kg), the fourth group (MSG group) were exposed to high monosodium glutamate (8000mg/kg), the fifth group (treatment group 1) were exposed to MSG (8000mg/kg) co-treated normal therapeutic dose of ACT (14.29 mg/kg), the sixth group (treatment group 2) were exposed to MSG (8000mg/kg) co-treated x5 ACT therapeutic dose (71.43 rng/kg).The samples were administered twice (morning and night) daily for 7 days. The rats in the respective groups were allowed free access to feed. On the seventh day, the animals were starved overnight and were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the testes tissue was collected to study biochemical parameters. MSG administration group exerted a significant (p<O.05) increase in catalase activity and magnesium concentration and decrease albumin concentration, there was however a significant (p<O.05) decrease in catalase activity and significant increase in magnesium and albumin concentration the groups that were co-treated with different concentration of ACT when compared to MSG salt. It may be concluded that Arthemeter-Lumefantrine combination improved the albumin and magnesium concentration but the catalase activity was impaired by ACT in the testes cells which are implicated in improved antioxidant activities, hence, ACT improves antioxidant activity in the testes cells.
