Abstract
The researchers investigated the
canonical relationship between teachers' effectiveness and students' affective
response in Secondary School Economics in Imo State. Two research questions and
one hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted a correlation design using
the multivariate linear method. The study was conducted in Imo State. The
population of the study was 94,963 SS1-3 students. The sample comprised 398 SS2
students. They were sampled through purposive and random sampling lechniques.
The instruments for data collection are: Teacher Effectiveness Scale (TES) and
Economics Students' Affective Response Scale (ESARS). The reliability of the
instruments was established using C'ronbach alpha statistics which yielded
internal consistency indices of 0.81 and 0.83 for TES and ESARS respectively.
Canonical correlation analysis was used to answer the research questions while
the hypothesis was tested using Wilks' lambda test statistic at 0.05 level of
significance through SPSS statistical softwares. From the data analyzed, it was
found that there is a moderate positive relationship between teachers' effectiveness
and students' affective response in Secondury School Economics in Imo State. It
was also found that students' attitude and teachers' classroom management
variates are great predictors of the relationship between teachers'
effectiveness and students' affective response. It was therefore recommended
that teachers should always improve their pedagogy and level of ICT usage in
teaching as it will equip them with current trends in education. which will
make their teaching interesting and motivating to the students.
