ABSTRACT
Evaluation of beta lactamase production potential of
Staphylococcus aureus isolates obtained from a total of 100 stool and urine
samples was carried out in this study. Samples were streaked directly on
manitol salt agar for isolation of S. aureus A total of 16 and 17 S. aureus
Isolate we're obtained from the 50 sample of urine and stool samples studied
representing 32.0% and 34.0% respectively. This gave a combined total of 33 5.
aureus Isolates from the 100 samples studied. Ofloxacin, levofloxacin, and
Ciprofloxacin we're the most potent antibiotics giving 81.8%, 81.8% and 72.7%
susceptibility values respectively. Gentamicin and Erythromycin also had 60.6%
and 33.3% susceptibility values whereas the Isolates show complete (100%)
resistance to Augmantin and ceffazidime. This study revealed that 13 out of the
total 33 Isolate were Methicillin resistance while the remaining 20(60.6%) were
Methicillin sensitive. Similarly, 23(69.7%) of the total isolate screened by
the acidometric method tested positive for betalactamase production. This study
shows that 69.7% student tested for S. aureus are resistance to beta-lactam
drugs.
