Behavioural Responses And Mortality Of Oreochromis Niloticus Fingerlings Exposed To Blue Omo Detergent Under Laboratory Condition
ABSTRACT
Acute effects of detergent (blue Omo® Detergent) on Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings was investigated using the
continuous flow-through bioassay under laboratory The 96h L050was determined as 23.71 ppt. Behavioural pattern before death, opercular ventilation rates and pectoral fin-beats as well as visual examination of dead fish indicate acute effects of the detergent on the fish. Water quality analysis showed increase in dissolved oxygen content, from an average of 7.50mg1 in control tank to 8.50mgr1 in the tank containing 100ppt detergent. There was a sharp change in the pH from slightly acidic at 6.50 to an alkaline dead point of 10.85 ± 0.2.
