ABSTRACT

Twenty-Five samples from different parts of live mature catfish, Ciarias gariepinus were collected from the fish ponds around umudike area. Both healthy and diseased fishes were examined macroscopically for heart, skin, and intestine and gill disease. The heart, skin, intestine and gill of all the diseased fish were subjected for microbiological identification of pathogenic bacteria. The infected fishes possess ulcerative and haemorrhagic skin patches. The isolated bacteria from the heart, intestine, gills and skin of diseased were were seven (7) including; Shigella spp, Kiebsiella spp, E. coil, Salmonella spp, Proteus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas spp. The colony count ranges from 1.0x109to 8.6x109cfu/ml. The distribution of these bacteria ranges from 70-75, of which the location, chapel of revelation and entrepreneurial center constitute the lowest distribution and the location, research institute constitute the highest distribution respectively. The percentage of these bacteria varies so significantly of which Shigella spp has 10.2%, Klebsiella spp has 14.9%, E. coli has 22.93%, Salmonella spp has 10.77, Proteus spp 12.16%, Staphylococcus aureus has 17.40%, and pseudomonas spp has 11.60%. The susceptibility of these bacteria to different antibiotics were tested and were arranged in three different categories which includes resistant (<13mm), intermediate (14-17mm) and susceptible (>18). The bacterial isolates obtained from these samples influence rearing of the catfish negatively and also contribute to the unsets of infections on humans.
