Bacteriological Examination Of Poultry Litter And Water In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike Poultry Farm:- Azubujne, Onyinye E
ABSTRACT
Bacteriological examination of litter and
water from MOUAU poultry farm was carried out. Samples were randomly collected
from five sections of the farm containing broiler (starters), Broiler
(finisher), Turkey, pullet and Quail. Samples were cultured on MacConkey and
nutrient agar using the streaking method of inoculation. Cultural,
morphological and biochemical investigation reveals the isolate to be Bacillus
sp, Citrobacter sp, Staphylococcus sp, Proteus sp, Streptococcus sp, Klebsiella
sp, Enterobacter sp, Pseudomonas sp, E. coli and Salmonella sp. The bacterial
load of litter sample range from 29.9Sx10 4 -26.7Sxl04 with the higher load
been recorded against samples from L3. The range for the viable plate count of
a bacteria from water samples is from 19.95x10° -12.20x10° unit. Bacillus,
Citrobacter, E.coli and Enterobacter were isolated from all the sites (100%
occurrence). Proteus was not isolated from any of the water samples and was
present in samples collected from litter 1 (Broiler starter), and L2 (Broiler
finisher). There were more bacteria isolate (67) from litter samples than that
of the water samples (50). From both litter and water Enterobacter had the
highest frequency of occurrence ( 18) followed by E. coli (16) This study has
shown that the litters and water from MOU AU poultry farm are contaminated and
should be taken good care of so as to reduce high load of bacteria which could
lead to poultry diseases.
