ABSTRACT
In most rural communities, water is consumed
without testing its portability. The major sources of water apart from rainfall
are surface and river/stream water; in some cases, borehole water. Water
samples from stream and borehole water from different sources in Umudike,
Ikwuano Local government area was collected, bacteriological and
physicochemical analysis (temperature, pH, colour and odour) were carried out
using standard method. The isolates were identified using standard
microbiological standards. Results were compared with World Health Organisation
(WHO) water quality drinking standards. Total bacterial count for borehole
water samples were 0.32 x 105 cfu/ml, 0.21 x 105 cfu/ml, and for stream water
1.33 x 105 cfu/ml, 0.81 x 105 cfu/ml, 1.22 x 105 cfu/ml, and 1.00 x 105 cfu/ml.
Physiochemical result (pH; 4.5, 6.2, 4.3, 5.0, Temperature; 25°c, 26°c, 28°c,
26°c) were outside the limit and most were higher than the acceptable limits.
The detection of Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus,
Shigella species and Pseudomonas species in the water that was intended for
human consumption suggests that water from these sources may pose severe health
risks to consumers and is unsuitable for direct human consumption without
treatment.
