Bacterial Isolates And Antibiotic Sensitivity Profile Associated With Urinary Tract Infections In Students Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike
ABSTRACT
Fitly (50) samples of urine were collected
from students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture. Umudike to isolate
and determine the antibiotic sensitivity profile of bacterial isolates
associated with urinary tract infections (IJTI) in the students' population. Of
the 50 samples, only 14 (28%) produced significant growth and the antibiotic
testing was carried out on these 1 4 isolates. The bacterial isolates include
Escherichia coil, Staphylococcus aureus, Protein and Klebsiella. The
antibiotics sensitivity testing revealed that 13 (92.8%) isolates were
sensitive to Nitrofurantoin, 8 (57. 1%) isolates were sensitive to Nalidixic
acid, 10 (7 I .4%) isolates were sensitive to Gentamycin and 9(64.2%) were
sensitive to Ofloxacin. All the isolates were resistant to Amoxycillin and
Tetracycline. The antibiotic sensitive pattern of the isolates reveal high
sensitivity to antibiotics not frequently used for the treatment of urinary
tract infections and a high resistance to antibiotics commonly used.
