ABSTRACT

The study is designed to ascertain the availability and utilization of media resources for instruction in Adult Literacy Centres in Akwa Ibom. The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Population for the study comprised 1, 128 adult learners and adult facilitators in Akwa Ibom State. The purposive sampling technique is adopted in the study and a sample size of 200 adult facilitators and adult learners were drawn.  A research instrument titled “Availability and Utilization of Media Resources for Instructions in Adult Literacy Centres (AUMRIALC)” was developed and used for data collection. The instrument is validated by three experts. Cronbach’s Alpha Statics was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The average reliability co-efficient of the instrument is 0:796. Mean, standard deviation and t-test are used to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicated that adult literacy centres in Akwa Ibom State were mostly provided with chalkboard and chalk while they lack most of the media resources such as, pictures, posters, alphabets, letters, textbooks, radio programmes, computers and so on, which are highly needed for instruction for in adult literacy centers. The findings of the study also revealed that chalkboard and chalks are utilized to high extent while other media resources are not utilized because they are not available. Also, the findings revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean ratings of adult facilitators and adult learners on the media resources available for instruction in adult literacy centers, among others. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made; the government at all levels should create budgetary allocations for adult education at all levels. Media resources should be provided for adult learners. Institutions, governments at all levels should see to the provision of fund for purchase usage and maintenance of media resources. Workshops and seminars should be organized more regularly for adult facilitators and adult learners on regular basis. The government and institutions should improve the power provision systems in adult literacy centres.
