ABSTRACT
This study examined the potentials of dyes extracted from selected
plants namely; Gnetum species (okazi), Hibiscus sabdariffa (sorrel), Vernon/a
amygdalina (bitter leaf) and Gongronema latifolium (utazi) on cotton fabrics.
Two methods of dye extraction were employed; aqueous and organic. Analysis of
variance (ANOVA) was used to determine significant difference at (p < 0.05)
probability level in the various samples. The parameters used for the
evaluation were; beauty, sharpness, colour fastness and general acceptability
which was evaluated by twenty-four panelists. Bitter leaf dye emerged the best
in sharpness while sorrel dye was best in beauty and was generally most
accepted. Results from the study indicated that there was no significant
difference between sample ci (bitter leaf extracted with alcohol) and sample Ea,
(a control sample) at (P < 0.05) probability level. In evaluation of colour fastness,
sample Cl (bitter leaf extracted with alcohol) had better colour fastness than
the control sample. This shows that bitter leaf can serve as a substitute to
vat dye in terms of colour fastness. Based on the findings of this study, the
researcher recommended that further studies be carried out on ways to make
sorrel dye fast on fabrics. Also further studies on extraction of dyes from
other parts of these plants (apart from their leaves) to produce sharp,
beautiful, colour fast and generally accepted dyes be carried out.
