ABSTRACT
This work was undertaken to assess stakeholders perception of the influence of external auditing on corporate performance using SINGE OBI NIG. LIMITED ABA as case study. The study objectively aimed at assessing the existing relationship between the existence of external auditors and corporate performance; the relationship between the external auditors and stakeholders' expectation. Secondary, data personal interviews and questionnaires in Likert point scale were administered to respondents. The survey research design was employed content validity approach was used to ensure that the variables measured were all covered. This instrument was checked for reliability using test-re-test method. The result gave a reliability coefficient of 0.93 showing high degree of item consistency. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents. The selected respondents were: shareholders, employees and customers. A simple size of thirty one respondents was determined from the population of thirty four dravon from the three sets of respondents. The statistical tool used was the z-test of two tailed and the hypothesis were tested at 5°/o level of significance and 28 degree of freedom. The findings show that there is a significant relationship between the existence of external auditors and corporate performance; that there is significant relationship between the external auditors and stakeholders' perception. However, it was noticed that perception gap exists where the stakeholders expect auditors to perform beyond their statutory responsibilities or the contents in the engagement letter. Premised on this it was recommended that stakeholders should be made to understand that the external auditors merely form opinion on the financial statements prepared by the management and that his responsibilities are normally spelt out by the statues or engagement letters. It is believed that this work will contribute to the frontiers of knowledge in the external auditing and public/stakeholders expectations especially where organizations go under. The work is expected to add value in the academic circles and other relevant fields.
