ABSTRACT

 This research study on the "Assessment of Pension Fund Reform in the Nigerian Public Institutions. A study of selected institutes in Umuahia, Abia State". The work tried to know what Pension is all about, types, and problems that lead to the failure of Pension schemes in Nigeria and also the principles of a good Pension scheme. Furthermore, in maintaining focus to the subject under study, objectives, research hypotheses, etc. were all set to achieve the goal of the work. The literature review studied historical development of Pensions in Nigeria, how different forms of Pension schemes were managed, and are being managed. Also, what is obtainable in Pension schemes in other countries of the world. Typical calculations and computations on the old and new Pension schemes in Nigeria were all illustrated. The merits of the new Pension scheme in Nigeria over the old Pension scheme were also enumerated. The research methodology used in investigating and analyzing the data received was stated. Tile field work was tediously carried-out, which brought a feed-back from the people (public servants), who were central to the information needed and used for the subject of the research work. The researcher analyzed the data received, with which lie made his summary- in the summary, testing the first Hypotheses showed that, H0was rejected and H1was accepted. Thereby authenticating that there is significant difference iii the opinion of the respondents that Pension Fund Reform in the Nigerian Public Institutions showcase transparency, reliability and accountability. The second null Hypotheses were equally rejected, thereby proving that there is significant difference that the operations of the Pension Fund Scheme are understood by Public Servants. It was recommended that PFA's should aid their clients with Mathematical clarifications on the Statements of Accounts sent to them, as such will erase their fears that their money is not in bad hands but rather create the awareness that their Pension benefits are safe. Another recommendation was that. Corporate entities, employees, etc. who are not yet involved in the new Pension Fund Scheme should do so. Since the Scheme will ensure employment opportunities, and contribute to economic development in Nigeria.
