ABSTRACT
The age limit, O-5yrs, constitute the
most critical nutritional period in the life of a child. Growth within this
period is very rapid, and requires a constant and adequate supply of essential
nutrients to transform a child to a functional adult. Inadequate intake of
essential nutrient which includes, iron and vitamin C, quickly results in
1hiinicai signs of nutritional deficiencies and eventually increases in infant
mortality and morbidity rates (UNICEF, 1996). The value of iron and the vitamin
C as micronutrients in shaping the over all nutritional status of infants and
pre-school children is well documented. Inadequate supply of iron in diets
leads to iron deficiency —a nutritional disorder that affects over one billion
people particularly infants, and pre-schoolers in the tropic and sub-tropic
zones. If left un-correcte.d in children it leads to anamia of increasing
severity, diminished learning ability, increase susceptibility to infection and
greater risk of death (ACCISCN, 1991). Iron deficiency anaerni in children can
lead to a future adult population of reduced work-capacity, with adverse
effects on productivity, learning and the ability to care for children and the
home (ACC/SCn, 1991). ron-deficiency among children is prevalent in the
developing countries on account of low per capital income and poor health
polices. Under these condition, it is usually difficult to meet the large iron
needs imposed by rapid growth in children.
