ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to analyze the heavy metal in soil
and selected vegetables Water leaf (Ta/mum triangulare,), Utazi leaf
(Gongronema latifolium), Scent leaf (Ocimum gratissimum), Bitter leaf (
Vernonia amygdalmna). Umudike in Ikwuano Local Government Area in Abia State
was the unpolluted area while Ogoniland in Bodo city district in Gokanna Local
Government Area was the polluted area. Vegetables grown at the polluted area
could take up and accumulate metals at concentrations that are toxic to human
health. Soil and vegetables were sampled and analyzed using Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer; the samples were digested with HCL, Aqua regia (I-O3/HCL
(1:3)) and HNO3to determine the concentration of Heavy metal. The mean concentration
for each heavy metal in the samples were gotten and compared with the
permissible levels set by the FAQ and WHO. The results showed that the total
concentration was in the following abundance Fe, Pb, Zn, Mg, Cd and Cr are as
follows 10.45±0.05, BDL, 4.52±0.02, 726.50±33.38, BDL, 0.04±0.00 (Umudike) and
20.47+0.33, BDL, 4.30±0.03, 736.08±2.68, BDL, 0.05+0.00 (Ogoniland) mg/kg dry
weight. The order of abundance is Mg>Fe>Zn>Cr>Pb>Cd (Umudike)
and Mg>Fe>Zn>Cr>Pb>Cd (Ogoniland). Lead and cadmium were below
detection limit of 0.0001mg/kg. The trace metal Mg, Fe and Zn were higher in
the samples investigated while Cr was in minute concentration of Heavy metal
and Pb and Cd were below detection limit of 0.0001mg/kg. When results were
compared with standard permissible limit, Heavy metal levels were within safe
limit. Hence the selected vegetables and soil are free from toxic Heavy metal
and do not pose any health hazard to their consumer in the study area.
