ABSTRACT
The
study focus to assess the feeding practices and nutritional status of students
(10- 14 years) in Alvana Model Secondary School. Owerri in Imo State.. The
problem of the study is find out how to improving the nutritional well-being of
school-age children has the potential to reduce the severity of stunting,
increase weight, and support cognitive function and possibly prevent severe
consequences. The general Objective of this project was to assess the feeding
practices and nutritional status of students (10-14 years) in Alvana Model
Secondary School, Owerri in Imo State.. Relevant literatures were reviewed. The
study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population was of Alvana
Model Secondary School at the time of the study was 1.850 students according to
the Vice Principal, Admin. The sample for this study is 328 of five classes in
Alvana Model Secondary school, from JSS1 to SS2. 95% of 1.850 students in each
class was used. Questionnaire was administered to collect data on the socio-demographic
and socio-economic characteristics of the students as well as data on the
dietary intake pattern and food consumption frequency of the students The
findings also revealed that the socio economic and socio demographic
characteristics of the parents of these selected students have significant
effect on the nutritional status ofthe students. The study concluded by
recommending that Result-oriented Nutritional education must be emphasized also
at the primary school level in the rural areas not only to the mothers but to
the students as well as this will definitely go a long way in getting both the
mothers and students informed on the danger of malnutrition.
