ABSTRACT

This study was to access the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of Tetraplera tetraptera on some human pathogens. The antibacterial activity of Tetraplera tetraptera on some pathogens was investigated with different solvents (Ethanol, Methanol, water) against test organisms (Esherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureuas, Salmonella spp, and Shigella,). The different extracts were prepared at different concentration (40mg/mi, 60 mg/mi, 80mg/ml and 100mg/mi). The ethanolic and methanolic extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera was:found to exhibit variable degrees of antibacterial activities against the test isolates. This was shown by the clear zones of inhibition produced by both the ethanoiic and methanolic extract on the test microorganisms. The highest in-vitro antibacterial activity is 13mm and 16mm which was exhibited by both the ethanolic and methanoiic extract respectively, at the highest concentration of 100mg/mi against Staphylococcus aureus respectively, while no antibacterial activity (0.0mm) was exhibited by both the ethanolic and methanolic extract at the lowest concentration of 4Omg/ml against all the test organisms. Gentamycin were used as control. The aptioxidant potentials of Tetraplera tetraptera plant extracts have been linked with their' flavonoids contents may provide anti-inflammatory activity. Ethanoiic extracts and methanolic extracts of Tetraplera tetraptera have broad-spectrum antibacterial activity; hence can serve as natural therapeutic agent against some enteric pathogens.
