ABSTRACT
Diabetes,
a state of improperly regulated homeostasis of carbohydrate and lipid
metabolism is one of the major killers in recent times. Most prevalent form of
diabetes is non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM or type II). Rapid
hydrolysis of starch mediated pancreatic alpha amylase and lipase followed by
glucose uptake at intestine results in sudden rise in blood glucose levels,
causing hyperglycemia in type II diabetic patients. The purpose of this present
study is to investigate the effect of Hyptis suaveolens on alpha amylase and
pancreatic lipase and their mode of inhibition. The results showed that the
plant extract (20 mg/mL; 51.8%) was able to inhibit alpha amylase comparable to
the standard acarbose at 12.5pg/mL (78) in a competitive manner. Also the plant
extract showed a promising pancreatic lipase inhibitory effect with increasing
concentrations similar to acarbose in an uncompetitive manner as mode of
inhibition. Hyptis suaveolens could be used in the management of diabetic
complications.
