ABSTRACT
Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between
the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and a biological system’s
ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the
resulting damage. Oxidative stress plays a major role in the development of
chronic and degenerative diseases such as cancer, arthritis, aging, autoimmune
disorders, and cardiovascular and neuro degenerative diseases. However in
plants and animals, these free radicals are deactivated by antioxidants. This
study was designed to invstigate the presents of antioxidant components
(phenol, flavonoid, vitamin C, beta carotene and lycopene) and in vitro
antioxidant activities (DPPH,FRAP and Nitric oxide) of methanol extracts of
plants. A.bonnie and A.vogeUi were used for this study. The results showed that
the methanol extracts ofA.vogeUi and A.bonnie possess high content of
antioxidant even at lower concentration especially phenol 1(312 ± 5.10 and
282.2 ± 3.92mg/g) and flavonoid (1068.54 ± 25 and 414.58±2.30mg/100g)
respectively Antioxidant constituent of these extracts enables them act as
scavengers and convert the radicals to less reactive. However, this finding
suggest that since these methanol extracts ofA.bonnnie and A.vogeUi possess
high antioxidant components that can scavenge free radicals and reactive oxygen
species, thus, they can be used in pharmaceutical and food industries in
production of drugs and as a suppliment for the treatment and prevention of
diseases such as cancer, asthma, aging, etc. caused by free radicals.
