ABSTRACT

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can be complicated if not diagnosed early and treated. Bacteriological analysis of urine samples collected from female students staying in the female hostels of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Urnudike was carried out. A total of 100 urine samples were collected from the students, examined for turbidity and inoculated on Cysteine-Lactose Electrolyte Deficient (CLED) agar and Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA). The isolates were characterized by colonial morphology, Gram staining and biochemical tests. A total of fifty-two(52) bacteria! isolates were obtained which include: Escherichia co/i 14(26.9%), Staphylococcus aureus 24(46 .2%),Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CONs) 9(17.3%),and Proteus spp. 5(9.62%). The isolates were subjected to sensitivity tests against thirteen(1 3) antibiotics in current use, using the disc diffusion method. Most of the antibiotics were active against the isolates, of which Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin showed the highest zone of inhibition (20-30mm) against Gram positive and Gram negative isolates. However, Escherfchia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus and Proteus were 100% resistant to Augmentin, Cefiriaxone, Imipenem and Cefexime . From this study, periodic testing of UTI and also sensitivity testing prior to treatment is advocated.
