Antimicrobial activities of the leaf extracts of cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) and Vernonia aniygdalina (bitter leaf) and the seed extracts of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) were carried out. Ethanol and hot water were used as solvent for extractions. The plant extracts were prepared into antimicrobial disc standard antibiotic disc (Asodisk, Nigeria) were used as positive control while sterile water disc were used as negative control. The study revealed that the ethanol and hot water extracts of Vernonin amygdalina and Cymbopogon citratus had inhibition on the three pathogen. While Garcinia kola had effect only on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with no inhibition on Candida albican. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the ranged ethanol extract 0.0078 - 0.0039 mg/nil for Staphylococcus aureus, 0.25, 0.03125 mg/ml for Escherichia coli and 1.0 mg/ml for Candida albicans. The solvent used for extraction varied significantly (P < 0.05) to the three pathogen. The organisms susceptibility varied with more inhibition to Staphylococcus aureus and least candida. The antimicrobial effects of the three plants will serve as a good substitute for ever increasing resistance of human pathogen with orthodox medicine.
