ABSTRACT
The oil of Brassica nigra
commonly known as black mustard seed oil was extracted and evaluated for its
antibacterial potential. The oil was extracted using aqueous and solvent
extraction methods with water, ethanol and methanol. Black mustard seeds
(Brassica nigra) oil extracts were found to have high antibacterial activity as
was observed from the disc diffusion test done with the oil extracts; the oil
extracts were infused into paper discs and planted on inoculated plates and
incubated. The extracts were observed to have inhibitory effect on the
pathogenic organisms (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli). The Minimum Inhibitory
Concentration of the extracts were also determined. Phytochemicals such as
tannins, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids and phenols (1.13±0.01,1.01 ±
0.0.1,1.45 ± 0.00,1.37 ± 0.01, 1.08 ± 0.00) were also observed to be present in
black mustard seed extracts.
