ABSTRACT
Ginger (Zingiber officinale} and
Tumeric (Carcuma longa) are two plants that are used as additives in foods,
usually in the form of spices, colourant and preservatives and are known to
possess medicinal values. The investigation on the potency of Zingiber
officinale (Ginger) and Curcuma longa (Turmeric) extracts and their,
synergistic effects against some pathogens was evaluated. The antimicrobial
effect ofthese plant extracts was examined using ethanolic solvent and the
antimicrobial activity carried out using the Agar well diffusion technique. The
isolates were tested with the following concentrations, 200, 100 and 50mg/ml
and showed varying degrees of zone of inhibition ranging from 7.0mm -11.0mm.
Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), Minimum bactericidal concentration
(MBC) and Minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were also carried out using the
macro broth technique. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the plant
extracts ranged between 12.5 - 50mg/ml and minimum bactericidal/ fungicidal
concentration (MBC/MFC) ranged between 25 - 50mg/ml. The activities ofthese
extracts were below those of standard antibiotics and antifungi. Combining the
extracts produced an additive effect and can be considered as actual synergy
though it is not pronounced since the inhibition range were not higher than
those produced by the extracts when used singly. The standard antibiotics used
(Gentamicin and Ketoconazole) showed higher zone of inhibition (19mm -25mm)
than the synergistic effect ofthe extracts and also when used singly. Ginger
and tumeric showed appreciable antimicrobial effects and can therefore be used
in therapeutics.
