Antimicrobial Activity Of Vernonia Amygdalina (Bitter Leaf) And Cymbopogon Citratus (Lemon Grass) Extracts On Some Pathogens.
ABSTRACT
The
antimicrobial activity of ethanol, cold water and hot water extracts of
Vernon/a amygdailna and ('ymbopogon citratus on E. coil, S. aureus and C.
albicans were carried out. Ethanol, cold water and hot water of the test plants
showed inhibition on the three test organisms. The ethanol extract of Vernonia
amygdalina and cymbopogon citratus profoundly inhibited the growth of S.
aureus, E. coil and C. aibicans with inhibition zone diameter between 7.6mm to
15.7mm. The cold water extract of V. amygdalina and C. citratus inhibited the
growth of S. aureus, F. coil and C. albicans with diameter zone of inhibition
between 6.9mm to 10.6mm. While the hot extatract of V. amygdalina and C.
citratus inhibited the growth of S. aureus, E. coil and C. aIbican between the
ranges of 6.4mm to 9.5. This revealed that V.amygdalina and C. citratus have
antimicrobial activity on S. aureus, E. coil and C. albicans and probably could
be used to control infections associated with these organisms
