ABSTRACT
The antimicrobial activities of
ethanolic and aqueous extract of two mushrooms Ganoderma applanatum and
Daedaleopsis confragosa and both in synergy were tested on Staphylococcus
aureus, Salmonella lyphii, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
Aspergillus niger and Candida aibicans. Antimicrobial activity was performed by
the agar well diffusion method. The ethanolic extract of the two mushrooms in
synergy showed the highest inhibitory activities against the microorganisims.
E. coil was the least susceptible (6.3mm) to the extracts of the two mushrooms
in synergy and resistant (0.0mm) to the aqueous extract of G. applanatum. C.
albicans showed the highest sensitivity (23.3mm), while A. niger showed the
least (6.3mm) for fungi. The significance of antimicrobial activity of the
mushroom extracts was compared with two standard antibiotics chlorornphenicol
and flucanazole, using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Minimum Inhibitory
Concentration (MIC) was evaluated for each mushroom extract and it ranged from
6.25mg/mi to 200mg/mi. The results in this study suggest that the ethanolic
extract of the two mushrooms extracts in synergy, possessed broad-spectrum of
activity against the microbial isolates used.
