ABSTRACT

Uvaria chamae and Eleusin indica exhibited antimicrobial activity against both the Gram positive and Gram negative test-organisms at 500mg/ml and 250mg/mi for methanolic extract except for P. ceeruginosa A1CC27854 and E. faecalis ATCC7O8O which had no inhibition. Aqueous and methanol extracts of Eleusin indica and Uvaria chainae had strong inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC2 5923, Escherichia coli ATCC2 5922 and Salmonella typhi at 500mg/mi. partial to no inhibition was observed in lower concentrations of 250mg/mi and 125mg/mi. The extracts had MIC values ranging from 250mg/rnl-62.5mg/mi for Eleusine indica and Uvaria chamae and MBC values of 250mg/mi-125rng/mi. Strong inhibition was observed at MIC values of 125mg/mi except Escherichia coli ATCC25922 but at 62.5mg/mi. Only Staphylococcus aureus ATCC2 5923 and Escherichia coli ATCC2 5922 showed inhibition. Antimicrobial activity was also not observed from 62.5mg/mi, 31 .2mg/mi, 15.6mg/mi and 7.81mg/mi for methanohc extracts of Uvaria chamae while antimicrobial activity was not observed from 62.5mg/mi - 7.81mg/mi for aqueous extracts of Uvaria chainae. Antimicrobial resistance was observed at 250mg/ml for aqueous and methanolic extracts of Uvaria chamae. The extract had no inhibition at 250mg/mi for methanolic and aqueous extracts of Eleusin md/ca while partial to no inhibition was observed at 125mg/mi and 62.5mg/mI for methanolic extract of Eleusin indica. Partial to no inhibition was also observed at 125mg/mi for aqueous extract of Eleusin inc//ca. Antimicrobial activity was not observed for Aqueous extract of Ele us/n md/ca at 62.5mg/mi, 31.2mg/mi. 15.6mg/mi and 7.81mg/mi, while no antimicrobial activity was recorded for methanoic extract of Eleusin md/ca from 31.2mg/mi, 15.6mg/mi and 7.81mg/mi. The phytochemical screening showed that the leaf extracts of Ele us/n inc//ca are rich in alkaloid (1.8%), saponin (1.71%) and terpenoid (1.67%) and Uvarici chamae are rich in alkaloid (1.8%), saponin (2.12%) and terpenoid (1.73%), while flavonoid (0.42%) and (0.8%) appears to be low in quantity for Eleusin indica and Uvaria chamae respectively.
