Antihemolytic Effect Of Ethanolic Leaf Extract Of Cajanus On Zwovudine Induced Hemolysis In Wister Albino Rats
ASTRACT
This study was designed to evaluate a antihemolytic effect of the ethanolic leaf extract of Ciii anus cajan on zidovudine induced haemolysis in Wister albino rat. A total of sixteen albino hats randomly divided into foui groups of four rats each were used Zidovudine an antiretrovinal drug was used to induce haemolysis in group3 and the leaf extract and zidovudine were given to group4 only. Both the drag and the leaf extract were orally given to the animals at imil/lOOg body weight for a period of 28 days after which haematological tests were carried out through cardiac ptinture. EDTA was the anticoagulant used The tesult showed a decrease in significant difference in group3 in EFT(0.34±0.09),RBC(3 .0250±1, 1),PCV(27.5±6.8),AND ',Hb(9.15±2.3) when compared to the control . This may be a proof that zidovudine caused .haemolysis in the experimental animals Also, theie was a non significant difference in group4 in EFT(0 45±0 04) when compared to the control(0.45±o.o6).,this is suggestive of the antihaemolytic potentials of Cajanus cajan ethanolic plant extract.A slight incràe vas also• seen in group4 in PCV(39 00±1 4) when compared to the control(37 7±2 6) This is indicative of Polycythemia vera (PV), a myeloprolifeiative disorder in which the bone maiiow produces excessive numbers of red cells, a condition associated with elevated hematocrit
