ABSTRACT
Pseudomonas
aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that is a leading cause of morbidity
and mortality in cystic fibrosis patients and immunocompromised individual. The
aim of this study is to evaluate the antibiotics resistance of Pseudomonas
aeruginosa isolated from the clinical sample (wound swab). A total fifty (50)
clinical sample were collected from patient at Federal Medical Center Umuahia
and cultured on nutrient agar and MacConkey Agar. The Bacteria isolates trom
the wound samples were identified by morphological characteristics,
pigmentation on media, microscopy, biochemical and sugar fermentation method.
This method also revealed that a total oftwenty five (25) Pseudomonas species
were isolated from fifty (50) wound samples. The highest number to be 17(60%)
from male sample, while 10(40%) from female (46%) showed no growth. Antibiotics
susceptibility and resistance profile of gram negative isolates revealed that
P. aeruginosa exhibited high level of susceptibility to Amoxil 25(92.5%),
Erythromycin 24(88.8%) and Levofloxacin 25(92.5%). However higher resistance to
Chloramphenicol 27(100%), ciprofloxacin 21(77.7%); Amoxicillin 24(88.8%),
Norfloxacin 24(88.8%) were seen in this study. Therefore, there is a need for
clinicians and environmentalist to implement prophylactic measures that are
aimed at reducing not only nosocomial infections but also infections that can
be caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from clinical specimen.
