Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern Of Salmonella Isolated From Cow Intestine In Umuahia

ABSTRACT

The antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Salmonella plated from cow intestine from Umuahia abbatoir was investigated. Sixty (60) samples of the intestinal fluid were analysed. Out of the sixty samples, 17(28.3%) were positive for Salmonella spp. The antibiotic susceptibility test was done using the Kirby bauer disc diffusion method. Multi disc containing eight antibiotics; Amoxicillin (loj.tg), Coinmoxazole (25jig), Nitrofurantoin (30j.tg), Gentamicin (lOj.ig), Ofloxacin (5j.tg), Augmentin (30.tg), Nalidixic acid (30.ig), Tetracycline (30.tg) were used. The susceptibility of the isolate was shown as zones of inhibition. The result showed that Nitrofurantoin (70.6%) had the highest sensitivity followed by Ofloxacin (58.8%) and Nalidixic acid and Augmentin (52.9%) respectively. Cotrimoxazole gave the highest resistance of 82.4% foolowed by Tetracycline (64.7%) and Amoxicillin (47%) The result of this study confirms the presence of multiple resistant Salmonella in cow, which is a major public health concern because of their zoonotic transmission.
