Antibacterial Susceptibility Patterns Of Bacterial Pathogens Isolated From Diarhoeal Stools In Private Hospitals Within Umuahia

An assessment of the susceptibility
patterns of enteric pathogens associated with diarrhoea! patients attending
private hospitals within Umuahia for diagnosis and treatment were done from
August to October, 2008. Twenty-eight (28) diarrhoeagenic stools were assessed
and at least one enteropathogen was detected in all. Bacteria detected among
cases include Salmonella spp which was detected in 16 (57.14%) out of the 28
diarrhoea! stools assessed; Shigella spp which was detected in 22 (78.54%) out
of the 28 stools assessed and Escherichia coli which was detected in 20
(71.42%) out of the 28 stool assessed. The highest occurrence of diarrhoea!
pathogens isolated, were seen among the age group of 5-1 5years. Of the 16
Salmonella spp isolated, 9 (56.25%) were Salmonella lyphimurium, 4 (25%) were
Salmonella paratyphi while 3 (18.75%) were Salmonella typhi. All the
enteropathogens isolated showed the highest rate of susceptibility to
Ciprofloxacin and Gentamycin; having Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella typhi,
and Shigella spp being 100% susceptible. However, the highest rate of
antimicrobial resistance was seen with Augumentin and Septrin; having S/ilgel/a
dysentariae being 100% resistant to Augumentin. Improved personal and
environmental hygiene, proper health education, and appropriate use of
antimicrobials were recommended.
