ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to assess the antimicrobial of Laurus nobilis and Syzygium aromaticum on some bacterial pathogens .The leaves of Laurus nobilis and Syzygium aromaticum were purchased at Ubani, Main market in Umuahia, Abia State and transported to the laboratory for microbiological analysis. The test organisms used in the study were Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The quantitative phytochemical screening of Laurus nobilis and Syzygium aromaticum showed that HCN (20.00±0.00a) has the highest activity in Syzygium aromaticum while Tannin (O.24±O.24d) had the lowest activity. Saponin (16.04±0.11a) had the highest activity on Laurus nobilis while Tannin (O.25±O.00b) showed the lowest activity. The antimicrobial activity (zone of Inhibition) of Ethanol and Aqeuous extracts of Syzygium aromaticum against some bacterial pathogens (mm). Which showed that Pseudomonas 7.00±1.41a showed the highest zone of activity on the ethanol extract while S. aureus, E.coli, Shigella I.00±O.00b showed same zone of inhibition respectively. Also the aqueous extract showed that Salmonella 11.0±1.41 a showed the hIghest zone of inhibition while Shigella I .00±0.00c showed the least zone of inhibition. The antimicrobial activity (zone of Inhibition) of Ethanol and Aqeuous extracts of Laurus nobilis against some bacterial pathogens (mm). which showed that Shigella 7.oO±1.41a showed the highest zone of inhibition on the ethanol extract while S.aureus and Pseudomonas 0.00±0.00 showed the least zone of inhibition respectively. While on the aqueous extract S.aureus 7.00±l.41a showed high zone of inhibition while E.coli showed the least zone of inhibition 2.50±O.7Ob. Gentamicin used as the control on the antimicrobial activity (zone of Inhibition) of Ethanol and Aqeuous extracts of Laurus nobilis against some bacterial pathogens (mm) ranged from 14.70±0.43" to 26.66±O.35' while water ranged from 9.67a±o.58 to 13.67±0.58 also for Syzygium aromaticum against some bacterial pathogens (mm) gentamicin ranged from 14.70±0.43 to 29.92±0.15 while water ranged from 9.67'±0.58 to 13.67c±1.15. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Laurus nobilis was 100-200mg/ml and 50-150mg/mi while for Syzygium aromaticum was 150mg/ml and 50mg/ml. The ethanolic extracts of leaves of Syzygium aromaticum, and Laurus nobilis can be useful in the treatment of infections caused by some bacterial pathogens.
