ABSTRACT
The investigation on the potency of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) extracts and their synergistic effect against some pathogens was carried out. The antibacterial effect of these plants was examined using ethanolic solvent (95%) and water. The antibacterial activity was carried out using agar well diffusion techniques and the bacterial Isolates were tested with the following concentration of the plant extracts 200, 150, 100 and S0mg/ml respectively. Crude .extract of the solvents gave varied zones of inhibition. P. aeruginosa was most susceptible to the aqueous and ethanolic extract of Z. officinale (21.7mm), C. longa {17.3mm) and their combination extract (20.7mm) while Salmonalla was least sensitive. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) ranged from 12.5 to 200mglml. The standard antibiotics (Chlorampehnicol) showed higher inhibition than the synergistic effect of extracts and when used singly. There was significant difference between the aqueous and ethanolic extracts (P<0.05). Ethanolic extracts was observed to have higher potency than the aqueous extract of the plants. Therefore the plant Z. officinale and C. Longo should be employed in treating some human pathogenic organisms. >
