ABSTRACT

The study evaluated the antihypertensive effect of niethanolic extract of Carica papaya seed in sodium chloride induced albino rats. Twenty two (22) wister albino rat serving as the experimental animals were assigned to 6 groups of 4 rats per group. Group 2,3,4,5 and 6 we1e induced hypertension by administering sodium chloride at different dosage according to their body weight. Group 2 served as a negative control (without treatment) while group 1 served as positive control. Group 3 received standard drug (captopril) as treatment while group 4,5 and 6 received extract at different dosage for treatment (loOmg/kg,200mg/kg,400mg/kg) respectively. The administration was done along side with treatment for 7days. The result showed the administration of sodium chloride lead to high pulse rate of the untreated group, thereby lowered by drug and extract treatment, and also there was a significant (p< 0.05) dose- dependent decrease of hypertension risk in the groups given the extract and drug compared to untreated group reducing (serum sodium level), CK level and LDH level. But in comparison of the extract treatment and drug treatment, the extract was more active than the drug (captopril). This study shows the relevance of carica papaya seed in use to prevent and maintain high blood pressure and also antihypertensive folkioric medicine.
