Anti- Anaemic Effect Of Ethanolic Leaf Extract Off Cajanus Cajan (Fio Fio) On Zidovudine Induced Anaemia In Wistar Albino Rats
ABSTRACT
The present study was carried out to investigate the anti-anaemic properties of the leaf extract C. cajan on zidovudine indiced anaemia on Wistar Albino rats based on some haematolocjical parameters like Pack cell volume (PCV), Haemoglobin (Hb), Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Total white blood cell count (TWE3C), Red blood cell count (RBC), Mean cell haemoglobin concentraUon (MCHC), Mean cell volume (MCV), and Mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) in the plasma of physiological rats. A total of sixteen (16) rats were grouped into four groups, with group A serving as the control. The remaining three groups: group B were treated With zidovudine orally at 0.5mg/bOg body weight, group C were treated with a combination, of zidovudine and leaf extract orally at 0.5mg/lOOg body weight each and group D were treated with C. cajan extract orally at 0.5mg/bOg body weight, morning and evening respectively. The effect was assessed on the basis of comparative measures of the evaluated indices in non treated rat vis-à-vis those treated. With the exception of neutrophil and lymphocyte the trezted groups produced no significant (P<O.05) changes in PCV, Hb, TWBC, RBC, MCHC, MCV and MCH. Although the values of the study suggest that Zidovudine caused mild anamia and which vvas slightly reverse by the leaf extract.
