Ameliorative Effect Of The Methanol Extract Of Ananas Cosmosus Peel On Ccl4induced Oxidative Stress In Wistar Albino Rats

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to investigate the ameliorative effect of the methanol extract of Ananas cosmosus peel on CCL4induced oxidative stress in wistar albino rats. Twenty five animals were divided into five groups of five animals each. Group A served as control, group B and group C were administered pineapple peel extract (at varying concentrations of 200mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight respectively), group D received Silymarin 100mg/kg body weight (positive control) and group E received CCL4(20%) and paraffin oil as vehicle. Animals were sacrificed after fifteen days treatment and liver tissues were used for the analysis of Antioxidant. The administrations of methanol extract of pineapple peel (200mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weight) demonstrated a significant (p increase SOD and CAT levels in the test groups when compared to the negative group.The activities of lipid peroxidation was reverted with a significant decrease in MDA level in the test groups when compared to the negative control group. This suggests an altered activity of the oxidative stress which could be as a result of the phytochemicals and antioxidant contents of the peels of Ananas cosmosus which includes phenolics, flavonoids and alkaloids, which afford a pledge for widespread use for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress in the future.
