Amelioratice Properties Of Justicia Carnea In The Antioxidant Status Of Thioacetamii)E Induced Wistar Rats
ABSTRACT
Thioacetamide (TAA) is a synthetic, colourless crystalline solid that is soluble in water and ethanol. It has been used extensively in the development of suitable animal models of acute and chronic liver injury employing various doses; The present study investigated the Anitoxidant effect of aqueous ethanol extract of Justicia carnae leaves on thioacetamide induced rats. The animals were divided into groups. Group 1 was the control; Group 2 was administered 300mg/kg TAA; Group 3 weradministered 300mg/kg TAA + 50mg/kg Silymarine; Group 4, 5, 6 received 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 600mg/kg were the extract group which was treated orally and lasted for l4days. The extract at tested doses showed series of significant increase (P<0.05) in the extract treated group when compared to the negative control and a significant decrease (P>0.05) in the extract treated group when compared to that of the positive control. The result indicated that, the aqueous ethanol extract of Justicia carnea on TAA- induced liver damage in wister rat contains some pharmacological active principles. It significantly reduced the elevated liver markers in the blood.
