ABSTRACT
This study was aimed at ascertaining
the acceptability of batik-dyed and tie-dyed fabrics for use in the interior
decoration of a female adolescents bedroom. The study was conducted using
twenty female adolescents students in 100 and 200 levels, in the Home Economics
Department of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, using
purposive sampling method. A laboratory experiment was conducted in designing
brocade fabrics using geometric shapes as the motif for the batik and tie
method. Items for the interior decoration of the female adolescent's bedroom
were sewn using the dyed fabrics and were compared with the printed products
which served as the control. The data collected were analyzed using
frequencies, simple percentages and analyses of variance (ANOVA). Results from
the data, revealed that the bedsheets (Ai, Au, Aiii), pillowcases (Bi, Bii,
Biii), printed bedcovers (Ci, Cii, Ciii), curtain box cover (Di, Dii, Diii),
curtains (Ei, Eu, Eiii) and lampshade covers (Fi, Fii, F'iii) were highly
acceptable for use in the interior decoration of the female adolescent's bedroom.
Results revealed that there were no significant differences existing between
the batik-dyed products and the printed products. (In addition to this,
significant differences were not observed between the tie-dyed products and the
printed products). Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that
handcrafted fabrics which aim at improving indigenous technology should be
encouraged. This will help to promote and boost the mass production of our
locally designed fabrics. It will also help to create more job opportunities
and thereby reduce over dependence on Foreign products.
