ABSTRACT

 The physico-chemical parameters of Anya stream in Umudike Abia State, Nigeria were investigated from October to November 2014. Three stations were studied from upstream to downstream using standard methods. The result indicated that human interaction influence to· an extent. A total of fourteen physico-chemical parameters were examined; Air and water temperatures, depth, transparency, pH, total dissolve solid, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, sulphate, phosphate, chloride and Nitrate. The air and water temperature value recorded was 28 to 35C and 25 to 34C respectively. Depth ranges between 51 to 155cm, transparency ranges between 29 and 108cm, pH ranges between 5.9 and 6.6, conductivity ranges between 17.4 and 108g, total dissolve solid ranges between 26.1 and 60.4mg/l, dissolve oxygen ranges between 4.57 and 9.96mg/l, chloride ranges between 4.8 and 27.6mg/I, sulphate ranges between 24.5 and 36.4mg/1, phosphate ranges between 0.79 and 1.28mg/l, nitrate ranges between 0.64 and 0.88mg/l, biochemical oxygen demand ranges between 1.00 and 6.2mg/I and chemical oxygen demand ranges between 172 and 299. However there were significant differences (p <0.05) in the values of depth and transparency, whereas others show no significant differences among the stations. The wastewater from the school environment had a negative impact at station 3 of the stream, though the recorded values were Still within acceptable limits. However, the portability of this water could be further improved by individuals using it as a source of drinking water by boiling and cooliilg after treatment. The government should pass a law against individual and factories discharging untreated wastes into water bodies.
