ABSTRACT

This study determined the role of internal audit in organizational performance. Nigerian Breweries Plc. was used as a case study. Since its inception in 1946. Nigerian Breweries Plc. has maintained an internal audit department which has always s rved as a balancing act that identifies the positive and negative aspects of the company's performance. Chapter one revealed that there were other internal factors that a iect a business viz employee, capital and cash flow. This led the researcher to formula hypotheses to test the effectiveness of the internal audit department as well as the relat onship between the role of internal audit and the role of employee, capital and cash flov. on the performance of Nigerian Breweries Plc. The hypotheses are as follows: Hypothesi I -Ho: The internal audit department of Nigerian Breweries Plc. does not contribute significantly to the performance of Nigerian Breweries Plc. Hypothesis II- Ho: Other sd ..ted internal factors (employee, capital and cash flow) do not have higher significant mdi 'idual effects on the performance of Nigerian Breweries Plc. than the internal audi department does. Hypotheses were tested based on research questions as contaii d in the research questionnaires issued to respondents. In the final analysis, the nil! hypotheses were rejected. The role of internal audit in organizational perfo. mance cannot be underestimated neither can the role of cash flow, employees and c ital be underrated. While an organi?ition strives to maintain a sound internal audit deprtment, maintaining a steady cash flow, well developed employees and profitable capital investments should be regarded as a priority because the roles of this trio on organi.zatic ial performance are higher than the role of internal audit which nonetheless has an outtanding role on the performance of an organization.
