The Response O Broiler Finisher Chickens Fed Graded Levels Of Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena Celosoides) Leaf Meal
ABSTRACT
A 4-week feeding trial was conducted to
determine the response of broiler chickens to graded levels of inclusion of
Gomphrena celosioides leaf meal (GCLM). Four experimental diets (treatment
groups) with 3 replications of five birds each were used in a completely
randomized design. Proximate and gross energy composition of the test feedstuff
are as follows: dry matter (89.72%)., crude protein (15.99%), ether extract
(2.10%), crude fibre (16.14%) ash (15.90%), nitrogen free extract (49.78%) arid
gross energy (3.27OKcal/g). The determined anti-nutritional factors in the test
feedstuff are: phytate (1.56%), oxalate (1.28%), tannin (0.095%), saponin
(2.17%) and HCN (23.75mg/kg). For growth performance, significant differences
(p>O.OS) occurred only for total and daily feed intake. Treatment 3 had the
highest value (3366g) while treatment I has the least value (2952g) for total
feed intake. The daily feed intake followed similar pattern. The feed
conversion ratio favoured treatments 2 and 3 with 3.36 and 3.41 respectively.
The carcass value showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). Organ weight
values showed that birds placed on test diets compared favourable with the
control diet. The economics of the diets, cost per kg of feed and gross margin
values favoured T4. In conclusion, diet 3 with 7.5% level of inclusion of GCLM
is recommended.
