The Prevalence Of Mange In Pigs In Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
A survey was conducted on the prevalence of mange inpigS in
Owerri North L.G.A, Imo state. Ten pig farmers were sampled. Data were
collected by structured questionaires visual observation and personal
discussion with the farmers in the study area between .january and february
2007. Data obtained crc analyzed by simple descriptive statistics 1 he survey
revealed that a total of 79 (9.9%) of 802 pigs in Owerri North L.G.A yielded
evidence of inlction with the disease. Affected pigs were restless, shook their
ears and rubbed tlieii bodies against the walls of the pens clue to seyre
pruritus. there were thick asbestos-like leions on the ear, along the bides of
the neck, the elhow, snout, the trunk, particularly die back and lateral
abdoniinah region. Occasionally lesions were present on the legs. The disease
pccuived most during the wet season, The study showed that a higher prevalence occurs
in weaner pigs than in other classes of pigs and that proper sanitation
decreases the Prevalence rate of th disease. Also, group housing of pigs
increased the opportunity for spread of the disease,
