ABSTRACT
True
metabolisable energy (TNE), Titrogen corrected Tri Netabolisable Energy (TNEn)
and True digestible protein of some selected non-conventional feedirgstuffs
(peelings of cassava, yam and plantain, cocoa pod, ccwpea-husk, maize wet-millings,
and limabeans) were investigated using poultry 21 broiler chickens and 15 ducks
with average weight of 1.7+ 0.Q7 kg and 2.45 ± 0.15 kg, respectively, were
randomly assigned to 10 test diets in a completely randomised design. Groups of
3 birds each were individually force fed with. 30g of the test material after
they had beep starved for 24hours. The last group was fasted for 48 hours to
collect faeces for endogen ous energy and nitrogen analysis. There were no
significant difference for TNE, TNEn and TDF values of the kitchen waste.
Plantain peels having the lowest values of 2.2 91 ± 0.076 kcal /g, 1.697 +
0.066 kcal /g, and 50.623 *8.109 mg/g respectively and cassava peels being the
highest with 3.1+81 ~ 0.336 kcal /g, 2.724 ± 0.296 kcal/g nd 160.404 --
30..22& mg/g for TNE,TNEn and TDP respectively. 3ignificant different
(P~Q.01) •ccured. in the TNE and TDF values of farm wastes. These ranged from
1.027 0.105 kcal/g and 26.838 ~ 3.076 mg/g cocoa pod to 3.609 0.074 kcal/g and
169.979 ± 6.129 mg/g for maize wet-milling respectively. TMEn follow, the same
trend. Notable differences (PL..0.05) occured in the THE, TMEn and TDP values
of limabeans processed in different forms. Raw limabean ha the highest THE of
4.365 ± 0.043 kcal/g, and the lowest TDP of 151.088 ± 13.700 mg/g, while
hydroxide treated limabean ha.d the highest TDP of 205.279 ~ 3.687 mg/g with
appreciable THE of 3.888 ± 0.032 kcal/g. Results obtained indicate' ,
therefore, that cassava peelings, maize wet-milling and lirna bean have
appreciable bioavailable energy and protein and can substitute acme of the
conventional feeding stuffs. Whereas, cowpea husk, coca pod, yam and plantain
peelings can be used on consideration of their relative availability and
cheapness.
