The Incidence, Spread And Economic Importance Of Piglet Scours In Umuahia, Abia State.
ABSTRACT
A two month study on the incidence
and economic damage of piglet scours was carried out in Umuahia from September
- October 2004. The study was focused on finding out the incidence rate,
mortality rate, case fertility rate, spread and economic implication of this
disease. A questionnaire was used to collect data from ten randomly selected
farms in the area. Simple descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data
from the questionnaire. The result obtained showed that morbidity rate was 27.97%,
mortality rate 19.9% and case fatality rate of 71.0%. Results also showed that
spread of scours was majority from infected animals, feeding 'regime (30%),
poor sanitary condition, illiteracy and poor management. A very high case
fatality rate obtained shows the level of economic implication of this disease.
At the end of the study, recommendations were made to farmers on how to reduce
piglet mortality due to scour. This includes proper feeding and adequate
sanitation. The veterinary doctor or animal scientist should he consulted when
there is any outbreak.
