The Impact Of Branch Banking On The Profitability Of Commercial Banks In Nigeria (Study Of Zenith Bank Nigeria Plc. 1998 - 2012)
ABSTRACT
This study is focused on the Impact of Branch Banking on the
Profitability of Commercial Banks in Nigeria with respect to Zenith Bank
Nig. PLC. performance from 1998 to 2012. The objectives of this study
are to determine the impact of branch banking among other measures
of commercial banks profitability which are deposit liability, operating
cost and non-performing loans on the profitability of commercial banks
in Nigeria, asses the trend of branch banking over the period under
study as well as to determine the advantages and challenges of branch
banking in Nigeria. Secondary sources of data collection such as zenith
bank statement of accounts and CBN bulletin were used in generating
data on the variables studied. Ex-Post Research Design was employed in
analyzing the pre-existing data. While multiple regression analysis using
the least square method and trend analysis were used in analyzing the
variables. The findings of this study show that; branch banking as a
measure of banks profitability has a negative impact of banks
profitability and there have been great changes on the trend of branch
banking over the years. Based on this, the study recommends that
commercial banks should control the rate at which they establish
additional branches as it has a negative impact on their profitability.
